Vegas/Grand Canyon Trip Part 1

As Marc Jr. has gotten closer and closer to college age, I have this feeling of urgency to see the things we meant to see and do the things we meant to do while they all lived in our home.  Last summer we had planned a Great American Road Trip up and down New England, but it was all cancelled for Covid.  One place on our wish list was the Grand Canyon.  We decided to take Marc and Julia's birthday week (their birthdays are 4 days apart) and take the oldest four to the Grand Canyon.  It was AMAZING- one of the best trips we have ever, ever been on!  We fell in love with the American west!

We are so busy, we don't have weeks for a long road trip, so we decided to fly on a five day/four night trip.  BB was gracious to keep Anastasia for us at our home so we could make this happen.

It took 2 flights to get out there.  The views from the plane were awesome.

We bought a package deal with a travel agency to go on this trip and it flew into Vegas.  At first, I was disappointed because I didn't want to go to Vegas, but we ended up LOVING it.  There is a lot of bad, but there is some family fun too!

It was fun to see all the fancy hotels-

Our goal for the first night was to find an Inn and Out Burger- and we did!  The weather was AMAZING!  It was supposedly in the 90s when we landed, but we wore sweatshirts.  It never got too hot or too cold- just mild, beautiful weather.

We stayed at the Sahara Las Vegas the first night.

In the morning, Marc had to work so we had a leisurely breakfast in one of the restaurants.

My big take away from Vegas was that my hair does much better there than in the south.  My hair is a victim of southern humidity

After our breakfast we started our drive through the desert to the Grand Canyon.  First stop- the Hoover Dam.  We have often watched the David McCauley movie on how the Hoover Dam was made and were eager to see it in person.  We did stop at the Lake Mead overlook- this is the lake created by the Hoover Dam-

We made it!

We had lunch in the deli-

The drive through Nevada and Arizona was as much fun as any of the trip.  It's absolutely BEAUTIFUL!  Mommy played DJ and we danced and sang our way through the desert in our rental van.

We took a drive on Route 66 and visited Seligman, which is the town that the Disney Cars movie is reported to be based on.

And then we got to the prize- the beautiful Grand Canyon!  We got to stay for a long while and see the sunset.

After our wonderful time exploring the Grand Canyon- and we drove around and saw it at several different spots- we went into town and had pizza.  While waiting for pizza we played Uno- something we wouldn't normally do if Anastasia was with us.  It was really fun.   We continued the games in the hotel and had some very loud and competitive Uno games!

We were thrilled that our hotel had an indoor pool and hot tub to relax in.  We swam both nights and slept like babies.  :)
