Moundville

Today was the most beautiful day and they cancelled altar server training and our basketball game so we had a whole day off!  We decided to drive out to Tuscaloosa and see Moundville Archeological Park- a preserved site of mounds built by the Missippian Indians beside the Black Warrior River.  They built these mounds and lived there from around A.D. 1000 until A.D. 1450.  It's really amazing that we can still go see them and even climb some of them.

This was the largest mound- they believe the chief probably lived here.

When they lived here the entire area was enclosed with a palisade and they believe up to 10,000 people lived and worked around there.  It was an important village.

After climbing the largest mound we took a hike through the woods to the Black Warrior River-

Then we stopped into the museum where they have many artifacts that the various digs have discovered.

It was a great day.  It's so nice to be back to normal after the icy week.  I took the children to the flight museum on Friday and Julia had her makeup horseback riding lesson.
